If you landscape your driveway, take a few moments to think about installing a snow melt system. If this is something you would consider, install the tubing under ground so that the framework is in place.
Snow melt systems can be installed in poured concrete or interlock pavers. They are more efficient and effective with the poured concrete method.

No. you do not have to use the 2.5″ Styrofoam as an insulator however, it will save you a lot of money in operational costs and will ensure your system keeps up with the storms much better.
The most important thing to do is rough in the underground piping under the driveway and ensure the gas can be brought to the boiler location. Once these 2 items are completed, you are well on your way to throwing away your shovel.
